Rainbows Light the Way

June 5, 2025 by Allison Allmon Dixson, PhD 1 Comment

Happy Pride Month to everyone! And when I say everyone, I mean EVERY single one of you—every human striving to survive and thrive in a world where that can seem impossible.

I lift and share my voice (well… my lyrics—because my singing, at my children’s request, is reserved for showers and car rides) with you. Together, we are a chorus singing in exam rooms, classrooms, courtrooms, boardrooms, voting booths, chat rooms, and every room we can and do squeeze into. You may not always hear this chorus; sometimes it isn’t audible due to systems that keep the volume down, but it is never silent. The lyrics are forever written on our bodies and minds, in our hearts and souls.

And so, I sing to you: Happy Pride, this month and always.

Below is my second installment of parody songwriting as a coping technique. You may recall the post from earlier this year, “GATHERing for Integrated Care.” This song, entitled “Rainbows light the way,” is written to the tune of Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA.”

Rainbows Light the Way

I stepped on the path with a dream in my heart
Ready for the journey ahead
Welcome to the place where love is the start
Where I can be who I am

Walked to the room, here I am for the first time
First thing I see, ALL are welcome sign
Listen to and support me
Their privilege and responsibility

My heart is pounding and I’m feeling strong
It’s time to sing my own song
All of us together now
Be you and proud x 3

So I lift my head up, feelin’ free today
Rainbows light the way
I’m standing tall,
ready to say
With my name and pronouns,
I’m here to stay
Gender care is the way
Gender care is the way

Getting the support, it’s not just a phase
It’s a journey to be who I am
Every step I take, I’m closer to the place
Where I can truly stand

Doing me, with tucking or a binder
Allies by my side, feeling lighter
Gender euphoria goal of care
nothing else can compare

My heart is pounding and I’m feeling strong
It’s time to sing my own song
All of us together now
Be you and proud  x3

So I lift my head up, feelin’ free today
Rainbows light the way
I’m standing tall,
ready to say
With my name and pronouns,
I’m here to stay
Gender care is the way
Gender care is the way

Feel the love in the room,
Euphoria shining light
Gender-affirming care, is my right
I’ll be me, with allies by my side

So I lift my head up, feelin’ free today
Rainbows light the way
I’m standing tall,
ready to say
With my name and pronouns,
I’m here to stay
Gender care is the way
Gender care is the way

I’m living my truth, nothing can sway

I LOVE this, Alli! I Thank you for sharing the beautiful product of your coping technique – feels like an act of resistance and I am grateful I got to (try) to sing along!
